Your Statement of Purpose is not a CV rewritten in paragraphs. It should show how your experiences led you to your current research direction and why a PhD is the right next step.

Paragraph 1: Your research direction

Introduce yourself through the research questions that currently matter most to you.

Include:

  • Your broad research area
  • The career or research direction you are working toward
  • One or two accomplishments or experiences that establish credibility (e.g. your publications)
  • Why a PhD is necessary for your next step

Avoid making "getting a PhD" sound like the goal itself. The PhD is a step toward your longer-term research or career vision.

Paragraphs 2-4: Your research trajectory

Select roughly three key research experiences. You don't need to list everything you have done. You need to show how your research interests evolved over time and how you grew as a researcher.

For each experience, make clear:

  • The question or problem you worked on
  • Your specific contribution
  • The outcome, result, or insight
  • What the experience taught you or how it shaped your next question

The reader should see a logical connection between the work you have done and the work you want to do next.

Final paragraph: Your future research interests + faculty and program fit

Name the questions, methods, systems, or problems you want to explore in graduate school. You do not need a fully formed dissertation topic. You do need enough direction to show that your interests are real and informed by your experience in the field.

Then, name two or three potential advisors whose work you can discuss specifically.

Explain what makes this program useful for your goals: faculty, collaboration opportunities, resources, training environment, or another concrete feature. Always be specific.

Common mistakes

  • Opening with a generic childhood-passion story
  • Repeating your CV instead of interpreting it
  • Naming faculty without explaining the connection
  • Stating a vague goal such as "I want to conduct impactful research"

Your next step

An outline cannot determine the strongest story in your application. That requires decisions about what to include, what to cut, and, most importantly, how to frame your research trajectory.
