Most PhD applications include the same core materials. The goal is to make all of these pieces tell one coherent story about you as a researcher: that you have the preparation, research potential, and fit to succeed in the program you're applying to.
CV
The CV has no page limit, though I recommend keeping it to one to two pages. It presents a full history of your academic credentials.
The main focus of your CV should be your previous research, academic experiences, and accomplishments.
Every research description should communicate what you actually contributed and what came out of the work.
Statement of Purpose
A statement of purpose (SoP) is an essay whose primary purpose is to convey why you are qualified and are a good fit for a particular graduate program. This is the only place in your application where the committee gets to hear your story in your own voice.
A statement of purpose is usually one and a half to two pages long. It should explain your research trajectory, the questions you want to pursue next, your career goals, and why the specific faculty and program make sense for you.
This essay needs to be professional, with a primary focus on your research and academic experiences. It is not meant to be a personal essay, although you can and should mention parts of your identity that might have shaped or influenced your academic and research trajectory.
Here are two examples of SoP prompts:
- “Please describe your aptitude and motivation for graduate study in your area of specialization, including your preparation for this field of study, your academic plans or research interests, and your future career goals. Please be specific about why our graduate program would be a good intellectual fit for you.”
- “Your statement of purpose should be written for the admissions committee, which consists of faculty members in the department, describing your research/academic activities over the last few years, your current interests, and your plans for the future. Your statement should convince the admissions committee that you are able to communicate effectively and with a deep understanding of your subject area. It is not intended to be a biographical sketch or a reflection on one’s decision to enter the field.”
Recommendation Letters
Usually 3 letters are required. The strongest letters come from people who supervised your research and can speak concretely about your work, growth, and potential as a researcher. If you're aiming to get into a top PhD program, at least 2 references should ideally come from your research supervisors.
Transcripts
Your academic record shows preparation for graduate-level work. Programs ask for transcripts from every institution you attended.
The best way to show you are academically ready for a PhD is to take graduate courses before you apply (e.g. in college).
Program and advisor fit
For every program, you should be able to explain why you want to work with the specific faculty you identified. A school name alone is not a reason to apply, and I cannot emphasize this enough. If you end up in a program where there is no faculty you actually want to work with, you will have a hard time there.
Optional requirements
Some programs may also request test scores, a research proposal, a personal history statement, a writing sample, or supplementary materials. Always check the program's current requirements.
The final check
Before submitting, ask whether your materials answer these questions:
- What research have you done?
- What did you contribute?
- What questions do you want to explore next?
- Why are you ready for a PhD now?
- Why is this program a good fit for you?
